The process of digestion involves mechanical and chemical digestion along with the processes of:
Ingestion
Digestion
Absorption
Assimilation
Egestion
Using either a starch molecule or a fat molecule, explain the journey from the mouth to the anuss and indicate clearly points at which mechanical and chemical digestion are taking place:
In your description you should include all five stages described above.
Guidance:
The route taken by the molecule
How and where the molecule is gradually broken down along the route (chemically and physically)
How the digestive products are taken up (absorption)
How the absorbed molecules are used by the cells (assimilation)
How waste products are egested
Solution
food molecule is transported through the mouth, then it is swallowed and then it is transported into the stomach where enzymes act on the food molcule to brak it down further. then it is passed on to the intestine whre undigested molesules are separated nad then ejcted from thr body
for example if starch molecule is consumed first the carbohydrate is first reacted to the saliva where the enzyme amylase converts the starch molecle into maltose. then the molecule is passed on through the gastrointestinal tract, and then it is passed on to esophagus by the process of peristalsis, which produces mucus for lubrication but without the involvement of the digestive enzymes. then next disaccharide molecules are converted into monsaccharides with the help of the enzymes maltases, sucrases and lactases, in the duodenum. in this satge the monosaccharides are absorbed by the bloodstream and the it travels into the cells, whre metabolic pathways take place to produce energy ehich ids consumed by the body. then it is apssed on through the small intestine the enzyme lactase which converts the molecule into glucoese and galactoe and absorbed by the small intestine, from here the glucose travels through the bloodstream and reached the liver, where glucose is stored as an energy molecule for future use by the human body. after that the ubdigested glucose molecule present in the liver is apssed on to the kidney , where through filtration process it is ejcted from the body in the form of uric acid.
