You are the manager of the northern branch of the Laurel City bowling alleys. The owner, Jill Espy, has 4 other bowling alleys around town. The average employee assigned to the concession stand of all the Laurel City bowling alleys lasts 3 years. However, in your branch the average employee lasts only 8 months. Jill is concerned about this huge discrepancy and wants to know your explanation for the difference and what you can do to correct the problem. Training new employees is costly to the company and this high turnover is costing her money that could be better spent elsewhere.

Traditionally theorist suggest that the managerial function of controlling should not be confused with control in the behavioral or manipulative sense. This function does not imply that managers should attempt to control or to manipulate the personalities, values, attitudes, or emotions of their employees. Instead, this function of management concerns the manager’s role in taking necessary actions to ensure that the work-related activities of employees are consistent with and contributing toward the accomplishment of organizational and departmental objectives.

How can a manager be assured or measure work that is performed when the employee may be 5,000 miles away?

Solution

Managers have to put in process standards that an employee has to adhere while performing his or her duties. Secondly, the job profile and KRA\'s (key responsibility area) of each employee should be comprehensive and should not leave any scope for ambiguity.

Having standrads in place and the detailed job profile will help the employees understand their role in the organization and what is expected of them in order to meet the organizational and departmental goals.

The manager is 5,000 miles away from the employees, but he should do a weekly video confrence with them on a weekly basis. (if the budget of Laurel City bowling allows them). If video confrencing is not withing their budget, the manager should do tele confrencing on a weekly basis.

The mission of the Laurel City bowling alleys should be clearly explained to all the employees. The employees should be made to realize that they are vital element helping the organization achieve its goals.

Jill Espy should have a HR policy for the organization which will guide all the branch managers regarding the control of employees.

Implementing these changes will ensure that the employee turnover is reduced.
