ECT122 Week 6 iLab #1

1. Define troubleshooting.

2. What is an open circuit?

3. What is the primary symptom of an open circuit?

4. What is a short circuit? Name several characteristics.

5. What is the primary symptom of a short circuit?

6. Using the circuit below and the indicated values, calculate the total current and voltage drops across each resistor.

7. Download the MultiSim file “Trouble1” from Doc Sharing, Week 6. Run the simulation. Determine the fault in the circuit by comparing the simulated results with the calculated values. What is the fault in the circuit? How did you come to that conclusion?

8. Download the MultiSim file “Trouble2” from Doc Sharing, Week 6. Run the simulation. Determine the fault in the circuit by comparing the simulated results with the calculated values. What is the fault in the circuit? How did you come to that conclusion?

9. Have the professor introduce a fault into one of the MultiSim circuits. Troubleshoot the circuit and determine the problem. Have the professor verify your results.

Solution

1) Troubleshooting is a systematic approach to problem solving that is often used to find and correct issues with complex machines, electronics, computers and software systems. The first step in troubleshooting is gathering information on the issue, such as an undesired behavior or a lack of expected functionality.

2) Definition of open circuit. : an electrical circuit in which the continuity is broken so that current does not flow.

3) The primary symptom of open circuit is the current drops to zero. and resistance across open circuit becomes too high and applied voltage appeared across open circuit.

4) A low resistance connection between two points in an electric circuit through which the current tends to flow ratherthan along the intended path. A short circuit can damage the circuit by overheating.

5) The primary symptom of the short circuit is high current flow trough the circuit and resistance is less and voltage drop also less.

6) given that R1=R2=1Kohm.

total resistance=R1+R2=2kohm=2000ohm.

total current I= total voltage/total resistance=10/2000=5mA

Voltage across resistor R1= current*R1=5mA*1kohm= 5v

Voltage across resistor R2= current*R2=5mA*1kohm= 5v
