How is the attachment of DNA polymerase to the DNA chain regulated?

DNA polymerase requires a primer attached with the template strand, a hydroxyl end of a nuleotide in the primer and the nucleotides to be added. there are two metal ions needed for the DNA polymerase attachment. One is attached with the 3\' hydroxyl end of the primer and deoxy nucleoside triphosphate and the other only with the 3\' hydroxyl group. DNA polymerase has a structure similar to the right parm with fingers. The domains in the polymerase has aspartate residue and they bridges the two metal ions through the carboxyl group in the residue. These metal ions activate the 3\' hydroxyl group for attachment by activating the alpha phosphate group pof dNTPs.
