Can you help me set up the equations for this word problem please? Thank you

At 8:00 am Nancy took off down a river in her boat heading north. Two hours later, William takes off down the same river in his boat also heading north. Nancy\'s boat speed is 3km/hour more than William\'s. At 12:00 pm, Nancy is 44 km ahead of William. What is the speed of each boat?

Solution

Let the speed os William\'s Boat be \"x\"

since the speed of Nancy boat is 3km/hr more then Williams boat therefore

the speed of Nancy boat = x + 3

distance covered = speed * time

both are Travelling in same direction

Nancy started her journey at 8 AM

William started his journey after rwo hours i.e. 10 AM

AT 12 PM

Distance covered by Nancy = speed * time

                                           = (x+3) * 4                  //       8 AM to 12 PM so time = 4 hrs

                                         = 4x +12               (1)

Distance covered by William = speed * time

                                        = x * 2                    // 10 AM to 12 PM so time = 2 Hrs

                              = 2x          (2)

distance between them = 44

Distance covered by Nancy - Distance covered by William = 44

4x + 12 - 2x = 44

2x + 12 = 44

2x = 32

x = 16

speed of william\'s boat = 16Km /hr

Speed of Nancy\'s boat = 16 +3 =19 km/hr
