why examing of turbulent flow is a difficult subject
Solution
Turbulent flow is characterized by disorderly and rapid fluctuations of swirling regions of fluid, known as eddies, throughout the flow.. The momentum and energy transfer are enhanced consequently due to these fluctuations. In laminar flow, energy and momentum are carried across streamlines by molecular diffusion, because of the orderly manner along pathlines where the fluid particles flow. However, in turbulent flow, momentum, mass and heat transfer are increased significantly because mass, energy and momentum are much more rapidly transported, by the swirling eddies, to the other regions of flow. Consequently, we encounter much higher values of friction, heat transfer and mass transfer coefficients in turbulent flow.
The eddy motion in turbulent flow leads to higher fluctuations in the values of pressure, density, temperature and velocity, even if the average flow is steady. All these reasons lead to making examining of turbulent flow a difficult task.
