Alamar blue acts as an intermediate electron acceptor in the electron transfer. The oxidation-reduction potential of Alamar Blue is +380 mV at pH 7.0, 25 °C. Alamar Blue, therefore, can be reduced by NADPH , FADH , FMNH , NADH , as well as the cytochromes. The color of the indicator changes from blue to pink state. In viable cells the mitochondria reduces this dye, alamar blue. So if the cells are viable it converts blue to pink and if cells are dead the dye will be in blue color. Hence alamar blue is used as an indicator.
