6. A local department store has 17 workers in the women\'s apparel department. The following table lists the hourly wages those 17 workers. Hourly Wage (S) Number of employees 10 17 What is the mean hourly wage for the employees in this department? Can you compute the median hourly wage? The mode hourly wage?

Solution

Solution:

Mean wages = Total hourly wages / Nos of employee = $130/17 = $7.65

There are 17 employees, hence median hourly wages is the wages of (17+1)/2 = 9th person i.e. $7 per hour. Hence median wages is $7 per hour.

Mode hourly wages is the wages that highest number of employees are drawing. Therefore 7 number of employees are drawing $7 as hourly wages. Hence mode hourly wages will be $7 per hour.

Computation of Total Hourly Wages to employee
Hourly Wages Nos of employee Total hourly wages (Hourly Wages * Nos of employee)
$6.00 4 $24.00
$7.00 7 $49.00
$9.00 3 $27.00
$10.00 3 $30.00
Total 17 $130.00
