6.2.3 Suppose an unconfined aquifer lies over a confined aquifer as shown in Figure P6.2.3. Determine the flow out of both aquifers. GS K1 30 m/day Impervious layer 82 m 75 m 50 m K2 = 60 m/day 900 m Figure P6.2.3

Solution

Solution:

We know darcy formula

q=kiA

K=coefficient of Permeability

i=hydraulic gradient

A=cross section area

Find kequivalent: When flow is parallel to bedding plane,

Keq=(K1z1+K2Z2)/(Z1+Z2)

=(30*32+60*50)/82

=48.29m/day

=48.29/(24*3600)

=5.59*10-4m/s

i=h1-h2/ L

=82-75/900

=0.007

A=75*1=15m2

Discharge Is:

q=5.59*10-4 *0.007*75

=2.94*10-4 m/s
