You are choosing between two health clubs. Club A offers membership for a fee of $40 plus a monthly fee of $25. Club B offers a membership fee of $15 plus a monthly fee of $30.
Using variables of your choice, set-up an equation for each club’s membership cost. Make sure your variables are defined clearly.
After how many months will the total cost at each health club be the same?
What will be the total cost for each club from part (b)?
Solution
Let x be the number of months for which, the club memberships for the clubs a and b will be same.
The cost of membership of club A for x months is 40 + 25x ...(1)
The cost of membership of club B for x months is 15 + 30x ...(2)
Now, if the cost of memberships of clubs A and B for x months are equal, then we have 40 + 25x = 15 + 30x
or, 30x - 25 x = 40 - 15 or, 5x = 25. Therefore, x = 5. Thus the cost of membership of clubs A and B will be equal in 5 months.
