A 5 kg mass is suspended from a spring that has a stiffness

A 5 kg mass is suspended from a spring that has a stiffness of 2000 N/m. What damping constant added to the system would critically dampen it?

Solution

>> Mass of Spring, m = 5 kg

>> Spring Stiffness, k = 2000 N/m

>> Now, Under Critically damped system,

Damping Ratio = 1

=> c/2mw = 1 ,

, where,

c = Damping Constant

w = Natural Frequency = (k/m)1/2

=> c = 2*m*(k/m)1/2 = 2*(m*k)1/2

=> Required Damping Constant = 2*(m*k)1/2 = 200 ................ANSWER.....
