ques 5 HW8 When 2020 103 J of heat energy is added to 496 g

ques 5 HW8

When 2.020 × 103 J of heat energy is added to 49.6 g of hexane, C6H14, the temperature increases by 18.0 °C. Calculate the molar heat capacity of C6H14.

Solution

First thing you need to do is calculate moles for hexane:

Using the periodic table we can see that one mol of C6H14 is 86g

(49.6/86) *1 mol = .577 mol C6H14

Now we need to use the formula: Cp = qp/(n*delta T)

Cp= Molar Heat Capacity (What you\'re solving for)

qp = Heat Energy (Given in the problem (2020))

n= Molarity ( Solved for in the first step (.577))

delta T = Change in Temperature (Given in the problem (18.0))

Cp= 2020J / (.577*18.0) = 194.493Jmol-1K-1
