A transportation engineering study requires that you determine the number of cars that pass through an intersection traveling during morning rush hour. You stand at the side of the road and count the number of cars that pass every 4 minutes at several times as tabulated below. Use the best numerical methods to determine The total number of cars that pass between 7:30 am and 9:15 am The rate of cars going through the intersection per minute

Solution

(a) Number of cars between 7.30 - 7.45 : In 4 min: 20 cars, So, In 15 min: 75 Cars

   Number of cars between 7.45 - 8.00 - In 4 min: 30 cars. So, In 15 min: 112.5 Cars

      Number of cars between 8.00 - 8.15 : In 4 min: 26 cars. So, In 15 min: 97.5 Cars

      Number of cars between 8.15 - 8.45 : In 4 min: 20 cars. So, In 30 min: 150 Cars

Number of cars between 8.45 - 9.15: In 4 min: 20 cars. So, in 30 min: 150 cars

                                                                                Total cars                585 cars

Total cars: 585

Total time: 15 + 15 + 15 + 30 + 30 = 105

Rate of cars = 585/105 = 5.5714
