HIV encodes retroviral protease enzyme for the production of viral-structural proteins and enzymes like reverse transcriptase. Protease enzyme breaks the large viral-protein in multifunctional components. The current enzyme show its action at later stages of HIV replication. Protease inhibitors like indinavir, ritonavir, nelfinavir, saquinavir and lopinavir tightly binds to the protease enzyme and interferes with it cleaving function of the enzyme, which finally results in production of immature non-infectious viral progeny. Hence, protease inhibitors prevent further infectious –rounds.
