ICAM stands for intercellular adhesion molecules.ICAM proteins are type 1 transmembrane glycoproteins.The ICAM proteins consist of 5 components-ICAM 1 to ICAM 5.ICAM proteins take part in inflammation, intercellular signalling process and immune responses.ICAM proteins are present in soluble form in human plasma .During inflammation and immune responses they are known to bind to LFA 1 antigen.

Leukocyte extravasation also known as diapedesis is the process by which leukocytes migrate from the blood vessels to the tissues.Leukocytes migrate from the blood vessels to the tissues to perform a number of functions such as phagocytosis,antibody production,release of histamine.Leukocytes need to travel to the tissues to perform a number of defense mechanisms.There are several steps involved in leukocyte extravasation which as mentioned as follows-margination,rolling,firm adhesion,migration through vessel eall,migration to tissue.
