In paragraph form and in your own words (300 word limit) What is Evolution??? explain the process of Natural selection and how it can generate evolutionary changes in a population.
Solution
Evolution: It is believed that the present characteristic features in today\'s generation of any species is the result of gradual and consistent transformation of its morphological and anatomical features from ancient species. For example the modern human has evolved from ancient Monkeys and Chimpanzees like animals. They used to wander in search of their food at different places on earth. When there was scarcity of food on land and their four feet posture was not proving sufficient in satisfying their hunger, they tried to stand on back feet and tried to explore the branches of trees. Hence after many generations, their body posture started getting straight, standing on two feet utilizing the fore arms in picking and holding the branches, plucking the fruits from them.
Same way it is thought that the reason behind long neck of giraffe is the urge to eat higher and higher fresh leaves from the trees. There are many rudimentary and extinct organs in our body that are no more in use so they are smaller in size than other. For example the Appendix which is a vestigial organ in human intestine used to digest cellulose in human body when we were fully dependent on grass and green leaves in ancient times. Now it has no use in our body because we eat cooked food now. This is also an evolution that the earliest man did not used to wear clothes, then he started wrapping himself in leaves, earliest man was wandering in search of food then he invented fire by the friction of two stones. And then he started cooking things. He invented wheel and started travelling from one place to another. So, this is all a gradual process of change or transformation from one adaptive feature to another, to enable a more successful survival. This gradual transformation of features from generation to generation is known as Evolution.
Natural Selection: Many species on earth get extinct because they do not possess certain adaptive features that make them fit for survival. For example Dinasaurs got extinct because they could not sustain in extreme ice age, as their body was too large and also they could not get enough food to survive. So, the species that can survive all the positive and negative effects of the environment equally, (to live and reproduce) are selected by the nature as a result of survival of the fittest.
The process by which the organisms that are better adapted to their environment are selected by nature to survive and reproduce, is known as Natural selection. Only organisms that are Fittest in their environment are allowed to live on, rest get extinct due to their inadaptive features. Hence in this way, better features develop in future generations that make them more compatible and better adaptive.
