a. optical encoders:

advantages: 1. optical encoder is a non–magnetic product.

2. In  optical encoders there will be no mechanical parts in contact.

3. optical encoders posses high reliability

4.optical encoders offers High resolution and also they are very light in weight.

Disadvantages:

1. optical encoders are very fairly complex with sensitive digital parts

2.optical encoders can be harmed by contamination.

b. sliding contact encoders:

advantages: 1. Sliding contact encoders are very low cost when compared to other encoders.

2. Sliding contact encoders are very sensitive and also they are also simple in construction.

disadvantages:

1.The main disadvantage of sliding contact encoders is friction, metal oxidation.

2. For sliding contact encoders maintenance is required

c. Magnetic encoders:

advantages:

1.In Magnetic encoders their will be a high strength magnetic areas which are imprinted on the disk

2.Magnetic encoders have higher durability and  reliability.

disadvantages:

1..Magnetic encoders have low resolution.

2. Magnetic encoders are very sensitive to temperature effects.

d. Proximity sensor encoders:

advantages:

Proximity sensor encoders are made up of a ferromagnetic where the flux linkages will vary and reluctance decreases as reluctance decreases and flux linkages increases and also induce voltage increases.
