5. Deforestration is defined as the complete clearing of tree formations and their replacement by using land for other purposes.
There are different causes of deforestration and one of the major causes is population growth. Rapid increase in human population had a serious effect on trees and forests. Increase in human population has increased demand for land and timber with the result of which trees and forests have been cleared indiscriminately to fulfiil these increasing demands for construction of homes , construction of roads etc.
Pollution is the undesirable change in physical, chemical and biological characteristics of air, water, land or soil causing harmful effects on our life or that of other species and cultural assets.
Increase in population has caused increased production of harmful substances which are added to environment which has altered the quality of air, water ,land etc.
With the rise in population, there has been rise in th number of industries, factories, vehicular transport, chemical processing units. All these discharge harmful substances which are added to atmosphere making it undesirable for humans and other species.
Increased population has increased demands for food and other basic needs. Food does not become available for every person. Increased population on one hand has resulted in deforestartion and conversion of agricultural land into colonies and human society, which has declined the productivity and on the other hand it has increased demand for food as a result of it food does not become available to everybody especially to people of third world countries.
