Robert Hooke was first used the word “cell” to describe the (In Latin, Cellula = small compartment) structure of dead cork when he observed under microscope. His observations were published in the book “Micrographia” in 1665 by the Royal Society.

When Hooke observed the cork cells, they appeared empty, resembling “Honey-comb” or small Boxes or Bladders of Air.” Because the cork cells are non-living cells. They mainly composed of a waxy material called “suberin” that restrict the passage of air and water. Rudolf Virchow was also contributed to cell theory.
