Containers arrive at a stocking station on a conveyor at the rate of five per minute. Container weight is 25 kg. Conveyor height is 50 inches and the stocking point is 70 inches above the ground. The stocking operation involves a twisting motion. The containers have well defined handles. Determine if this task is acceptable for 60% male population on full time basis. Containers sizes are 21 inches.
Solution
I think more data is required in this aspect. According to the given data:
It would be difficult for an average 5\'8\" man to pick a 25kg container from a height of (50 inches) 4\'2\" and make a twist and then keep it on the stocking point which is again (70 inches) 5\'10\" high.
However, frequency of the arrrival of the containers will not be an issue as the person has to do it only 5 times a minute standing at one place and making 2 twists (one for placing the container and another for returning back) in one operation.
Carrying the 25 kg weight at lower height is still possible but consistently carrrying it to a height which is more than a person\'s average height is really difficult. Carrying this task on a full time basis can give him severe back spasm and even permanent backbone damage.
