Define the following terms and state how each term describe a dynamic System\'s signal response. Time Constant Rise Time Setting Time Period of Oscillation Percent Overshoot Peak Time

Solution

a) Time constant is a parameter representing the response to a step input of first order system. It is also used to characterize the frequency response of various signal systems.

b) Rise time is time taken by a signal to change from specified low value to specified high value. Usually it is defined as the time required for the response to rise from x% to y% of its final value.

c) The time required for the response curve to reach and stay within a range of certain percentage of the final value is called as settling time. Minimum settling is the minimum value of y once the response has risen. Maximum settling is the maximum value of y once the response has risen.

d) The time taken to complete the one full cycle is known as the period of oscillation.

e)For a step input, the percentage overshoot is the maximum value minus the step value divided by the step value. In the case of the unit step, the overshoot is just the maximum value of the step response minus one.

f) The time at which the absolute value of y is reached is called as peak time.
