Solve the set of equations: 35 x+ 16 y = 5 , 5 x + 2y = 17

35x + 16 y = 5 ..........(1)

5x + 2y = 17 ..............(2)

Let us use the elimination method to solve:

First we will multiply (2) by -8 and add to (1):

==> -40x - 16y = -136

Now add to (1):

==> -5x = -131

==> x= 131/5

Now to calculate y, we will substitute with either (1) or (2).

Let us substitute in (2):

5x + 2y = 17

==> y= (17-5x)/2

= (17- 5(131/5)]/2 = -114/2 = -47

==> y= -57
