A project that developed a hybrid fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) composites girder for bridge engineering application. In this hybrid FRP girder, glass and carbon fibres are combined to produce the I-section. what do you think are the advantages and disadvantages of combining different types of fibres in one section?

Solution

Advantages:-

(1)GRP is strongest and most resistive to deforming forces when the polymers fibres are parallel to the force being exerted, and are weakest when the fibres are perpendicular.

(2) the orientation of reinforcing fibres increase the strength and resistance to deformation of the polymer.

Disadvantages:-

(1)Tensile forces stretch the matrix more than the fibres, causing the material to shear at the interface between matrix and fibres.

(2) Tensile forces near the end of the fibres exceed the tolerances of the matrix, separating the fibres from the matrix.

(3) Tensile forces can also exceed the tolerances of the fibres causing the fibres themselves to fracture leading to material failure.
