The ant Myrmecia pilosula is found in Australia and is called bulldog because of its aggressive behavior. It carried all its genetic information in a single pair of homologous chromosomes. Males are haploid and have just one chromosome.

Assume that a G1 somatic cell nucleus in a female Myrmecia pilosule containts 2 picograms of DNA.

a) How much DNA would you expect in a G2 somatic cell nucleus ?

b) How much DNA would be expected in an ovum of a female ?

Solution

(a) G1 is a starting phase of the cell cycle. In G2 phase, it means in S-phase the DNA double. So, if we have 2 picogram of DNA in G2 S-phase there will be 4 picogram of DNA.. Just double of its initial value..!!

(b) amount of DNA = no of chromatids present inside the cell.

As in female ovum 23 chromosome.. It means there are 46 chromatids present in the ovum. As the amount of DNA is equal to the no of chromatids hence the amount is 46..ll
