Why is mitosis an important topic for health professionals? Provide an example to support your answer.
Solution
Mitosis remains an important mode of cellular division from evolutionary times. Ranging from small unicellular eukaryotes to highly complex multicellular eukaryotes, the mode of cellular division organisms utilize is mitosis. Owing to following points, mitosis remains an important topic for health professionals:
1. Mitosis ensures an equal and similar distribution of nucleic acid among the daughter cells. This also ensures conservation of genetic material in a species among generations. Any deviation in this conservation results in change in genetic material, hence mutations. This is why geneticists and health experts are highly interested in physiological aspets of mitosis.
2. The overall physiological health of a cell is determined by manner of cellular division. An appropriate cellular division results in even distribution of cellular materials among the daughter cells. This ensures normal physiological functioning of the daughter cells and maintenance of upstream and down-stream signalling cascades. The molecular mechanisms which control these cellular divisions are highly conserved and any deviation from these mechanisms can be lethal. For example, uncontrolled cellular division due to loss/impaired molecular control leads to cancerous growth of a tissue. This is of vey high clinical importance because malignancy and benign condition, both are highly dangerous for a patient with improper mitosis and thus, cancerous growth.
Thus, the above stated information deciphers that conservation of cellular division and distribution of genetic material is highly important for normal physiological functions and clinical health of a cell. Any deviation from this management can be clinically alarming, leading to situations like cancer.
