Review two (2) of the experiments conducted on Marshmallow Peeps.
a. a. Reaction to cold
b. Reaction to heat
c. Solubility testing
d. Low-pressure environments
For each of the 2 experiments discuss the following:
4. What were the experimental questions?
5. What were the experimental methods?
6. What was the conclusion of each experiment?
7. Referring to chapter 1 in your textbook on designing an experiment, list 2-3 reasons for why each of the two experiments you reviewed on Peeps are really NOT experiments.
8. Do these experiments affect your decision to eat Marshmallow Peeps?
Solution
4) What were the experimental questions?
Reaction to cold experiments: Whether the peep withstand pressure after a sudden very low temperature?
Solubility testing: Whether the peep is a sugar or not?
5) What were the experimental methods?
Reaction to cold experiments: The peep was kept in a container with liquid nitrogen for few seconds and then pressure was given.
Solubility testing:
We assembled four Peeps, four 600mL beakers, and four solutions. The solutions are (as seen below from left to right): water, acetone, sulfuric acid, and sodium hydroxide. One Peep subject was gently plunked into each solution and we recorded our observations over the next hour.
6. What was the conclusion of each experiment?
Reaction to cold experiments: peeps are rarely found in polar regions. The presence of peeps in such an environment would clearly lead to disastrous results.
Solubility testing: Given enough time, the proper resources, and access to some really toxic stuff, one can probably dissolve just about anything except Peep eyes.
