Using the probabilities presented in Table 5.5-1, determine whether the events “individual is blood type O” and “Rh factor is -” are independent.

Solution

If two events are independent then are independent.

P(individual is blood type O* Rh factor)=P(individual is blood type O) * P(Rh factor)

The diagram describes that P(O- or O+)=P(O-)+P(O+)

That is the two events are mutually exclusive.

Thus the two events individual is blood type O and Rh factor
