Can someone please explain why recombination can only occur
Can someone please explain why recombination can only occur in females for X-linked traits.
Solution
Recombination involves breakage and reunion of DNA sequences. Homologous recombination occurs between DNA that possess sequence homology that means two DNA molecules possess identical nucleotide sequences.
In female two X chromosomes have the same genes arranged in the same order that means they are homologous chromosomes. So females have two copies of every gene, including the genes on sex chromosomes.
As we know that DNA recombination always occurs in between DNA molecules of similar sequences, thats why recombination always occur in X-linked gene.
On the other hand as the X and Y chromosome do not show minimal DNA sequence homology (except pseudoautosomal region), so general recombination not observed in males.
