The 15in long bronze C86100 pipe has an outer diameter of 07

The 15in long bronze C86100 pipe has an outer diameter of 0.75in and a thickness of 0.15in. if an axial tensile load of 10 kip is applied to it, determine the change in length and the lateral strain.

Solution

Modulus of elasticity of bronze C86100 = E=16969 ksi

Poisson\'s ratio=0.34

Outer diameter of pipe = 0.75 in

inner diameter of pipe = 0.75-(0.15+0.15)=0.45 in

Area of cross section of pipe = pi*(0.752-0.452)/4=0.2827 in2

Tensile load applied = 10 kips

Axial stress = 10/0.2827=35.37 ksi

Axial strain = 35.37/16969 = 0.0021

Change in length = 0.0021*15=0.031 in

lateral strain = 0.34*0.0021=-0.00071
