Catch per unit effort method is used to measure the abundance of a target species in an indirect way. It gives us an estimate whether a species is being overexploited or has a sustainable harvesting. For example, a decreasing CPUE will indicate over exploitation and a CPUE with no change would indicate sustainable harvesting. For CPUE, data can be easily collected and it also does not interfere with the routine harvesting operations. Stock management can be done by people who are harvesting the same. Standardized conditions are made so as to maintain uniform measuring conditions and so that there is not a reduction of catch size .

For example, fishes and their over exploitation can be measured using the CPUE . Increase in CPUE clearly states that there is an abundance of stock and more fishing efforts can be applied. Decrease states that the fishes cannot withstand that level of harvesting and the fishing efforts have to be reduced.
