Two national studies of intelligence reported the following after a large group of American college students took the same intelligence test. Study A reported the encouraging news that the mean intelligence score was 110 (the designers of the test defined a score of 100 as denoting average intelligence). Study B reported that 50% of those taking the test scored below average intelligence. Incidentally, President Johnson was appalled when presented with the conclusion from Study B.
(a) Which study do you believe and why?
(b) What is wrong with President Johnson
Solution
(a) Study A, only tells what is the expected intelligence score of an individual. Study B, has provided the number of students who has scored below average, that is, more than 50% of the students who has given test fares below the mean reported by Study A.
I would Believe in Study B, since it gives idea of the number of students with intelligence less than the average.
(b)There is not much wrong with President Johnson
