Solution
Oncolytic viruses, as the name suggests, cause lysis of tumors. Conventional chemotherapy and radiotherapy have limitations as well as side-effects. This creates a need for therapeutic strategies that can selectively destroy the tumour cells. Several viruses have the ability to grow in rapidly dividing tumorous cells, and kill them. Moreover, modern biotechnology and better understanding of cancer biology and virology allow engineering of oncolytic viruses (OVs) for better selectivity and enhanced oncolytic activity. This article reviews the mechanisms by which oncolytic viruses kill the tumour cells and the developments in the field of viral oncolytics with emphasis on their tumour-specific targeting.
