p2013 Estimate the total pad area needed for a caliper disk

p20-13)

Estimate the total pad area needed for a caliper disk brake used in a hoist. The use is intermittent. The average braking power is 48 hp during braking.

Solution

I am sure this question has some more data to it/or has is a sub part of some previous question. But I see your comment that this is complete question. So i am assuming some variables, it is not possible to estimate the pad area on the basis of just braking power.

Braking torque = 2 * mu * F * (R1^3 - R2^3) / (3 * ( (R1^2 - R2^2))    ( mu is friction coefficient , R1 and R2 are outer and inner radii, F is the braking force)

Braking power = Braking torque * angular speed

Braking torque = 48 * 746 / omega   = 2 * mu * F * (R1^3 - R2^3) / (3 * ( (R1^2 - R2^2))

Pad area = pi * (R1^2 - R2^2)

I know this might not be what you were looking for, but as i said this is all i can make of this question with just braking power given.
