ADCC is antibody dependent cell mediated cytotoxicity. It is a mechanism of cell mediated immunity whereby an effector cell of the immune system actively lyses a target cell, whose membrane surface antigens are bound to by specific antibodies. Usually, ADCC is mediated by natural killer cells (NK Cells) but macrophages, neutrophils and eosinophils can also mediate it.

By NK cells: Typical SDCC involves the activation of NK cells by antibodies. A NK cells expresses Fc receptor typically CD16. These receptors recognise and bind to Fc portion of an antibody such a s IgG, which has bound to the surface of a pathogen affected target cell. Once the antibodies binds with the Fc receptor on the NK cells, they release cytokines.

During replication of virus, some of the viral proteins gets expressed on the surface of the infected cells. Antibodies then binds to these viral proteins and the NK cells release proteins such as perforin and proteases which causes lysis of the infected cells to hinder the growth of the virus.
