upper-tail critical value of the test statistic in each of the following
circumstances:
a. a = 0.05, r = 4 rows, c = 5 columns
b. a = 0.01, r =4 rows, c = 5 columns
c. a = 0.01, r =4 rows, c = 6 columns
d.a = 0.01, r =3 rows, c = 6 columns
e. a = 0.01, r = 6 rows, c = 3 columns

[here there is no need of excel. here you need to know the distribution of test statistic only and to calculate the corresponding critical value using statistical software(minitab R etc)]

here for a contingency table with r rows and c columns the test statistic would follow a chi-sqare distribution with degrees of freedom (r-1)*(c-1)

a) a=0.05 r=4,c=5 so upper tail critical value at a=0.05 of the test statistic which follows chi-sqare distribution with degrees of freedom 3*4=12 is 21.0261

b) a=0.01 r=4 c=5 so upper tail critical value at a=0.01 of the test statistic which follows chi-sqare distribution with degrees of freedom 3*4=12 is 26.2170

c) a=0.01 r=4 c=6 so upper tail critical value at a=0.01 of the test statistic which follows chi-sqare distribution with degrees of freedom 3*5=15 is 30.5779

d) a=0.01 r=3 c=6 so upper tail critical value at a=0.01 of the test statistic which follows chi-sqare distribution with degrees of freedom 2*5=10 is 23.2093

e) a=0.01 r=6 c=3 so upper tail critical value at a=0.01 of the test statistic which follows chi-sqare distribution with degrees of freedom 5*2=10 is 23.2093
