PSS 1.2 General Problem-Solving Strategy Learning Goal: To practice Problem-Solving Strategy 1.2 for general problems. kng Strategy 12 for Two hockey pucks, labeled A and B, are initially at rest on a smooth ice surface and are separated by a distance of 18.0 m Simultaneously, each puck is given a quick push, and they begin to slide directly toward each other. Puck A moves with a speed of 3.70 m/s, and puck B moves with a speed of 3 70 m/s What is the distance covered by puck A by the time the two pucks collide?
Solution
both A and B are coming towards each other with same speed.
and the distance betweem A and B is 18 m.
A..................P......................B
suppose P is the point where both are collide .
Let the distance of A to P is x, then the distance of B to P is 18-x. let the both collide after time t.
then from the formula
speed= distance/time
we have for A
3.7= x/t................eq1
for B we have
3.7 = (18-x) /t.................eq2
from eq 1 we have x=3.7t
putting this in eq 2 we have t=(18/7.4)sec
putting this value of t in eq 1 we get x= 90 m
thus the distance covered by the puck A by the time the two pucks collide is 90 m
