Suppose that an action potential is started simultaneously at two different places on an axon. Describe the propagation of the two action potentials.

  Solution
If two action potentials are started simultaneously at different places on an axon, there well be two possible results. First, if there is ample distance to permit enough time for the action potential nearest the effector cell to find its resting potential, then then two separate action potential responses can occur. However, if the action potential is still within its depolarization or absolute refractory periods there is no secondary action potential response which results from the action potential farthest from the effector cell. Only one action potential will be realized in this latter case.
