Assume that, for the following data:
Missed 6, 4, 3, 5, 2
Distributed 5, 3, 2, 2, 3
the Morse code researcher did not match the subjects. Which statistical test would be appropriate? Carry out the test and evaluate the outcome at the .05 level and a nondirectional prediction.
Solution
Wilcoxon rank sum test will be appropriate.
First arrange the data (combined) is an ascending order:
2,2,2,3,3,3,4,5,5,6
Then assign ranks to the combined data:
2,2,2,5,5,5,7,8.5,8.5,10
Initially, 1,2,3…ranks are given then for ties an average was made and that rank has been assigned.
Now, look upto the Wilcoxon rank table for m=5 and N=5.
With alpha=0.05, the value is 4.
Now, calculate the rank sum which is smaller between the two: 8.5+5+2+2+5=22.5
Since, 22.5 is greater than 4, reject the null hypothesis.
