10 A point charge q1 350 x C is located on the y axis at y 0

10. A point charge q1 -3.50 x C is located on the y axis at y 0.120 m, a charge q2 1.80 x 10 9 C is located at the origin, and a charge q3 2.60 x 10-9 C is located on the x axis at x -0.120 m. Find the resultant force on q3.

Solution

Here, Q3 will be acted upon by forces from Q1 and Q2, both of which are negative, hence will attract Q3.

Force due to Q2 will be along x axis only and given as: Fx1(due to Q2) = 8.99 x 1.8 x 2.6 x 10^-9 / 0.12*0.12 = 2.921 x 10^-6 N

Force on Q2 due to Q1 along x axis = Fx2 = 8.99 x 3.5 x 2.6 x 10^-9 / 0.12*0.12*2*1.414 = 2.008 x 10^-6 N

Force on Q2 due to Q1 along Y axis = 2.008 x 10^-6 N [force along x and y axis will be same as angle is 45 degrees]

Net Fx = (2.008 + 2.921) x10^-6 = 4.929 x 10^-6 N

Net Fy = 2.008 x 10^-6 N

Therefore magnitude of the net force = 5.32 x 10^-6 N
