What must the emf e in the following figure be in order for the current through the R_2 = 8.00-fl resistor to be 2.40 A? Each emf source has negligible internal resistance. Take R_1 = 5.00-Ohm.

Solution

The loop rule here gives

24 - (2.4 * 8) - I(5) = 0

I = 0.96 A

solve for E using the loop around the E battery

E - (2.4 * 8) + ((2.4 - 0.96)* 2) = 0

E = 16.32 V
