One method to identify what the function of different parts
One method to identify what the function of different parts of the human brain is to record electroencephalograms (EEG) during specific sensory stimuli or mental tasks. The EEG is similar to the ECG, where electrodes are attached to the scalp. The \"inverse modeling problem\" is figuring which parts are active in the brain and how active are they given the measured biopotentials from the scalp. Consider the relatively simple situation where two parts of the brain are active. Using the concept of a volume conductor, explain why it is not possible to determine how active those two parts are from a single recording of the scalp biopotential.
Solution
Volume conduction, is the transmission of electric or magnetic field from a primary current source through biological tissue towards measurement sensors (Carsten, 2007). Further, since the volume conduction is different for different tissues through which the fields are transmitted, hence it is not possible to determine how active two parts of the brain are by single recording of the scalp bio potential.
