A 2inch diameter 20foot long steel rod is subjected to a ten

A 2-inch diameter, 20-foot long steel rod is subjected to a tensile load of 70 kips (say a 70-kip weight hangs from one end of the rod). How much does the steel elongate (stretch), in inches? (Assume no temperature changes; the change in length is mechanical, from the load) 2.

Solution

Change in length = PL/AE

Area = 3.14*2*2/4

=3.14 in2

E= 11000 KSi

Change in length = 70*20*12/(3.14*11000)

=0.4864 inch
