In Basic Series R-C Circuit Short the capacitor terminals with a lead and then measure Vx again. Why was it necessary to perform this step ?

Solution

Because for dc voltage source the capacitor acts as open circuit. So entire 10 volt will appear across the capacitor. So we can not measure vx properly. To get the correct value of R we need to remove the effect of capacitance by shorting its two terminals.
