What is the significance of the discovery of Quasi crystals
What is the significance of the discovery of Quasi crystals, to crystallography?
Solution
Most crystals in a 3D arrangement, repeat patterns continously to form a perfect crystalline structure and they behave differently.
Like a crystal with triangles repeating has a 3 fold symmetry and a crystal formed of repeating squares has a 4 fold symmetry. however in a quassi crystal they behave differently from all other crystals because they are made up of different shapes like squares, rectangle, pentagon and fill in the gaps. They are not good conductors and therefore they are good insulators.
They are used in surgical instruments, LED lights , and non stick frying pans
A lot more discovieries await in this subject and quasi had much to offer in future
