For a specific local bookstore, online book retailers such as Amazon.com are a part of the task environment - may be playing the role of a competitor or supplier depending on the situation existing in the store.
Introduction of tablet computers would be a part of the task environment or general environment depending on the context. Should the company be in a totally unrelated field of activities then it would be impacted indirectly by such a product offering. However should the organization be interdependent on such product offerings then this would be more apt to be defined as belonging to the task environment.
Open systems are relationships of structures and the problems of their interdependencies. A system is like an embedded network with the supra systems outside it in which the system operates and is directly influenced by the sub-systems that are elements of the system. The task environment is a subsytem of the general environment and each do affect each other. However, closed systems (as in physical sciences) have elements that have constant attributes and thus remain unaffected by the environment outside its boundaries.
