At a large automobile factory, four different machines are used to produce disc brakes. To make sure that the disc brakes are all being produced with comparable diameters, daily samples of 16 disc brakes are taken from the production lines of each of the four machines and their diameters measured. The deviation from the goal diameter of 322 mm is measured to the nearest micrometer. Assume that the distribution of these deviations is approximately normal with a common standard deviation. Use the below ANOVA table to compute the F value they would use for their test. Please show work
| Source | Sum of Squares | DF | Mean Square | F |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Groups | 3502.07 | 3 | 1167.36 | |
| Error | 5962.05 | 60 | 99.37 | |
| Total | 9464.12 | 63 |
Solution
F = MSG/MSE = 1167.36 / 99.37 = 11.74761
