9. From Figure 14.7, for a number 40 chain, what is the power rating for a 20-tooth sprocket turning at 1,800 rpm? What is the tensile load on this chain, and how does this compare to the ultimate strength? 10. If the chain in Problem 9 drives a 45-tooth sprocket and the shafts are 20 inches apart, find the output torque and speed and the length of chain needed.

Solution

velocity =pitch*speed*number of teeth /1000 in terms m/s

here, pitch =0.5inch =0.127 m (inch=0.254m)

speed=1800 rpm

number of teeth =20

substittue the values in above expression ,we get

V=(1800*20*0.127)/1000=4.572 m/s

From the 14.7 at speed 1800 rpm and 40 chain type and 20 teeth is 11 HP

BUt 1hP=0.7456 kW

11hP=8.2027 kW

tension in the chain becomes

P=8.2027/v=8.2027/4.572=1.7941N

Simply comparing with breaking load of the chain.the breaking load gives the ultimate load acting on the chain.

Data is available in table14.2 for chain system 40.Now compare the tension load with breaking load ,if tension load is less than the breaking load then chin is safe.
