Introduction: Sensory receptors in the skin respond to different stimuli (e.g., pain, touch, temperature, etc.). These receptors are not distributed in the skin equally, but are concentrated in different areas of the body. The following two experiments will allow you to determine the relative distribution of the receptors for touch in the skin (Error of localization and two- point touch discrimination).

The error of localization test demonstrates how receptors in different regions of the skin are represented in the cerebral cortex. For example, every region of the skin corresponds to a specific area of the somatosensory complex in the cerebral cortex. The two-point discrimination test will assess the ability to perceive the number of stimuli placed on the skin. Areas that have a higher density of touch receptors are better able to distinguish between multiple stimuli than those with fewer touch receptors.

Part 1a-Aim: ERROR OF LOCALIZATION..To investigate the error of tactile localization of receptors in the skin
Part 1b- Two-point discrimination
Aim: To investigate the relative density of touch receptors in different regions of the body.
Part 1c- Two-point discrimination (spatial acuity in males vs females)
Aim: To investigate the spatial acuity in the pointer finger of males vs. females. Peters et al.
(2009) found that women perceived finer surface detail than men; a result that related to finger size. We will do a much simpler analysis to see if we find a similar relationship.

Solution

Skin acts as the protective barrier between our body organ systems and the outer environment. Its ability to perceive touch sensations gives us a wealth of information about the world around us, such as temperature, pain, and pressure. Without this, it would be very hard to get around in this world! We wouldn\'t feel our feet landing on floor when we walk, we wouldn\'t sense when something sharp/pointed cut/poke us, and we wouldn\'t feel the warm sun on our skin. It is truly amazing how much information we receive through our sense of touch, and although we still don\'t know all the ins and outs of how the skin perceives touch, what we do know is interesting.

When we go into deep and start to study the skin physiology, the receptors of the skin can be classified as follows:

However, these receptors are different in densities in different parts of the body and their representation on cerebral cortex also varies. Here are the experiments which are carried for better understanding.

Part 1a. To investigate the error of tactile localization of receptors in the skin by Error of Localization Method.

Part1b. To investigate the relative density of touch receptors in different regions of the body by Two-Point Discrimination Method.

Part 1c. To investigate the spatial acuity in the pointer finger of males vs. females by Two-Point Discrimination Method.
