(20 pts) In the Star Trek Movie – The Voyage Home, the crew traveled back in
time to 1980’s earth. Toward the end of the movie they realized they needed to transport
a whale back to their modern time. They needed a material to construct a holding tankfor this voyage. In their search, they contacted an engineer and asked them to fabricate aholding tank out of transparent aluminum. This engineer did not know what they wereasking for, so they gave him an atomic level description of this transparent aluminum. The engineering took this description and was able to fabricate a transparent holding tankfor their whale.
The substance was described as being as transparent as glass whilepossessing the strength and density of high-grade aluminum. On the basis of atomic bonds and structure that the crew explained to the engineer, intowhich basic classification of materials (metals, polymers, ceramics) would transparentaluminum fit? Is this a predestination paradox/bootstrap paradox? Do we have this material available inour modern day? What do you think it describes?
Solution
a) The transparent aluminum are composed of three layers: an outer layer of aluminum oxynitride, a middle layer of glass and a rear layer of polymer backing into which basic classification of materials (metals, polymers, ceramics) fit transparent aluminum.
b) This is a boot strap paradox since the material being manufactured from the concept of transparent aluminium.
c) we are not having this material in our modern day. Transparent aluminum can be anywhere from three to five times as much to produce as traditional bulletproof glass material. In theory, however, it would not need to be replaced as often, saving money in the long run. Further, there is no existing infrastructure to produce the material in large panes.
d) The Movie\'s concept describes about fantasies of material production for transparent aluminium. consider we manufacture the transparent aluminium. instead of manufacturing the transpatent aluminium metal we can adopy any one of the several other non-metals like composite materials.
The movie makes an impinge move on new material discovery and also the show\'d the new concept of material creation.
