What factors are important when a company chooses a narrow span of control vs. a wide span of control?

I believe the selection will depends on the type of company, the type of philosophy and the distribution of activities the companies decides. When the company is divided in territories – very common on sales groups – the best selection is to have a wide span of control, as the most people will be sales executives distributed on the field. However, in a Service area for example, a narrow span of control could be more effective, since the people will have very different skills and knowledge in very different aspects, the control of this area will need an expert in many things, so is better to have supervisors for each area in order to facilitate the communication among the company.
